German Shepherd Feeding Calculator
How much should you feed your German Shepherd? Enter your dog's details below for a personalized recommendation based on AAFCO nutritional guidelines.
How This Calculator Works
We use the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula recommended by veterinary nutritionists: 70 x (body weight in kg)^0.75. This is then multiplied by an activity factor to get your dog's daily calorie needs.
Activity factors range from 1.0 for sedentary or senior dogs up to 2.0 or higher for working German Shepherds. Intact dogs generally need slightly more calories than spayed or neutered ones.
The cup-per-day estimate is based on average calorie density for each food type. Your specific food may vary — check the label for exact kcal/cup and adjust accordingly. Most standard kibble runs 350-400 kcal per cup, while high-performance formulas can exceed 500 kcal per cup.
Example: Feeding a 70lb Adult German Shepherd
A 70lb (31.8kg) moderately active adult German Shepherd has a resting energy requirement of about 897 calories (70 x 31.8^0.75). With a standard activity multiplier of 1.6, the daily calorie target comes to roughly 1,435 calories.
Using a standard kibble at 380 kcal per cup, that works out to about 3.8 cups per day — split into two meals of roughly 1.9 cups each, morning and evening. At a typical kibble price of $2.50 per pound, monthly food cost runs approximately $60-$80.
If that same dog is highly active — regular running, agility, or protection work — the multiplier jumps to 2.0, bringing daily needs closer to 1,794 calories and roughly 4.7 cups per day. Working dogs or dogs with high energy demands may need a high-calorie performance formula to keep portions manageable.
German Shepherd Feeding Tips
- Split into 2 meals minimum — German Shepherds are at high risk for bloat (GDV). Feeding one large meal increases this risk significantly.
- Don't free-feed — measured meals help you track intake and spot health issues early. Sudden appetite changes are often the first sign of illness.
- Wait 30 minutes after eating before exercise — another important bloat prevention measure. Avoid vigorous play immediately before meals as well.
- Adjust for body condition — you should be able to feel (but not see) your German Shepherd's ribs. Adjust portions up or down based on this, not just the calculator output.
- Transition food gradually — when switching brands or formulas, mix old and new food over 7-10 days. German Shepherds are known for sensitive stomachs, and sudden changes often cause digestive upset.
